Kahākūkahi Ocean Academy x Lāhainā Strong Nov. 19th Kāʻanapali 9am

Join us for an immersive ocean safety clinic at Kāʻanapali Beach! The Kahākūkahi Ocean Academy’s mission is to introduce Ocean guardianship to our next generation of Maui county keiki through Ocean Sport, Hawaiian cultural practice, and mentorship. On November 19th Kahākūkahi will be hosting yet another FREE event for West Maui keiki, this time in partnership with Lāhaina Strong and Fishing for Lāhainā. We hope to offer a fun and safe learning environment for our students and ʻohana with a Beach Cleanup, introduction to Ocean Safety and CPR, hoe wa'a (canoe paddling), lawaiʻa (fishing) and Jr Waterman Relay Races!

9am registration and sign in

9:30am blessing and oli

9:40am Ocean Safety and Hazard Assessment, S.O.A.K, I.A.S.I.S, K.A.I etc

10am Beach Cleanup

10:20am Water / Snack Break

10:30am Land and ocean workshops/activities including; swimming, surfing, ocean rescue and CPR, voyaging Hawai’i Star Compass, fish identification and knot tying, arts and crafts, resource management and environmental stewardship.

12pm Jr. Waterman Relay Races

12:30pm Lunch

1pm PAU

Safety teams in place:

⁃ EMT and first aid on location

⁃ Ocean rescue and B.W.R.A.G certified safety on the water

⁃ County Lifeguard on duty and in support of our program with county ocean rescue Jetski

Demographic and Grouping:

⁃ children of Hawai’i, majority west Maui, ages 6-12

⁃ Separated by age and skill/confidence on water with 3 different colored jerseys; Orange for young kids and not confident swimmers, Green for older kids and more advanced skill/confidence levels, yellow for splitting group sizes to limit no more than 10 per group, and wrist bands for all non-confident swimmers and kids who needs extra attention including children with alternative needs.

Land based activities and area:

⁃ confined to the beach in front of Leilaniʻs restaurant

⁃ Activities and first aid are hosted in 2-4 different stations located under their own individual tent on north end of park.

Water based activities

⁃ Ocean activities are weather permitted and include swimming, surfing and paddling.

⁃ Activities are confined to the area directly in front of lifeguard tower on north end of the beach.

⁃ 5:1 student to safety/instructor ration
