OUR MISSION MAUKA TO MAKAI

FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE SEA

About Kahākūkahi
Nonprofit Organization

Since the devastating 2023 Maui wildfires in Lahaina, the Kahākūkahi Foundation and Kahākūkahi Ocean Academy has refocused our mission to prioritize uplifting the mental well-being of the children of Maui.

Join us in building a community that empowers keiki (children) through ocean sports, environmental stewardship, and a deep connection to the ʻāina (land) and kai (sea).

To support this effort, we established our headquarters at Honokahua Bay, at Fleming’s Beach just north of Kapalua Bay.

We have equipped our facility with surfboards, stand-up boards, windsurfers, and Hawaiian canoes for the kids to enjoy.  We also provide ocean safety equipment, CPR models, art supplies, and are cultivating a growing garden. Here, children can safely engage in hands-on learning led by licensed professionals while finding healing through a deep connection to nature and other Hawaiian cultural practices.

We make science and conservation fun, engaging, and impactful through initiatives like our all-inclusive KOA KEIKI Ocean Sport & Safety program formerly known as the InZane Super Groms, where we lead beach cleanups and blue carbon restoration programs. Together, we can all grow as ocean guardians ensuring a thriving future for the land, sea, and the entire community.

By building strength, confidence, and adaptability in the ever-changing ocean environment, our keiki develop skills and mindsets that extend far beyond the water—empowering them in their daily lives. We believe every child in our community should have access to these cultural practices and ocean activities, which is why we provide mentorship and all necessary equipment at NO COST.

Beyond the waves, we collaborate with local artists, transforming debris from our beach cleanups into powerful art installations that amplify the message of ocean conservation. Understanding that the health of our oceans is directly tied to everything upstream, we also introduce keiki to experts in regenerative agriculture and Hawaiian restoration practices, allowing them to connect with the ‘āina (land), get their hands dirty, and develop a deep sense of mālama (stewardship).

For those especially moved to embrace the path of an ocean guardian and advance as watermen and women, we offer internships, scholarships, and ongoing mentorship, ensuring they remain valued members of our growing community dedicated to protecting and preserving our environment.

Our Roots

Here at Kahakukahi, we know that sometimes all it takes to change the world is a little support. Since our founding in 2000, we have been determined to make an impact. The core of our efforts is to bring our team’s fresh ideas and passion to the range of activities we’re involved in. Through all of our endeavors, we hope to display the conviction behind our beliefs.
